Credentials and Programs Offered in Alberta

Alberta's post-secondary institutions offer a wide variety of programs across the province. Check out close to 3,000 programs and program specializations spanning a wide range of credentials on OCCinfo.

Comprehensive Credentials Framework 

The Alberta Government will publish a Comprehensive Credentials Framework for Alberta's post-secondary system in 2016.

The Credentials Framework names 17 post-secondary credentials:

  • Certificate
  • Post-Diploma Certificate
  • University Certificate
  • Post-Baccalaureate Certificate
  • Post-Master's Certificate
  • Post-Doctoral Certificate
  • Journeyperson Certificate
  • Graduate Certificate
  • University Diploma
  • Post-Baccalaureate Diploma
  • Post-Master's Diploma
  • Post-Doctoral Diploma
  • Diploma
  • Applied Degree
  • Baccalaureate Degree
  • Master's Degree

Credentials Framework purpose:

  • Facilitate learning pathways
  • Promote educational quality and credential recognition
  • Contribute to economic benefits
  • Foster accountability and system coordination

The Credentials Framework incorporates the Canadian Degree Qualifications Framework and integrates two Alberta certificate and diploma frameworks approved in 2009. Each of the 17 credentials is defined using credential descriptors and credential standards.

Credential Descriptors contain:

  • Overall program outcome emphasis
  • Preparation for employment and further study
  • Typical duration
  • Typical admission
  • Number of credits
  • Institutional provider
  • Qualification awarded

Credential Standards include: 

  • Depth and breadth of knowledge
  • Knowledge of methodologies and research
  • Communication skills
  • Application of knowledge
  • Professional capacity and autonomy
