International Literacy Day

International Literacy Day - September 8th

The Power of Literacy

"Literacy is a fundamental human right and the foundation for lifelong learning. It is fully essential to social and human development in its ability to transform lives. For individuals, families, and societies alike, it is an instrument of empowerment to improve one's health, one's income, and one's relationship with the world."

- United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

International Literacy Day is celebrated around the world each year on September 8th. Adopted in 1965 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), International Literacy Day is observed every year, on this day.

International Literacy Day is observed to raise awareness of and concern for literacy issues around the world.

Although literacy is the great enabler, one in five Albertans, aged 16 and older, struggles with the ability to understand and use information from texts including news stories and instruction manuals.
